We have heard of Christmas in July, stores use the phrase to draw in shoppers with special summer sales. Today is the halfway mark of the year gone by. So, how about New Year’s in July? A time to revisit our New Year’s Resolutions, refresh and refine them with summer enthusiasm. Longer days and warmer weather may do just the trick for buckling down and tackling a few goals.

The goals I set in January were all about being free. Living in the moment, becoming independent, debt free, financially free and free to be myself.
My goal right now is to start a market garden of my own.
My garden will be full of vegetables and flowers to sell at a roadside stand and to local restaurants. I already have popcorn seeds in the ground, and a dozen trays full of squash, pumpkins and sunflowers. I have been working on farms since I was a little girl, and I am looking forward to taking a leap into running a farm of my own.
Most of my experience comes from working at a pumpkin patch. I have worked there almost every October that I can remember. So, when I found myself planning out my first crops, I thought of what I already knew: Fall on The Farm. Orange, purple, pumpkins and corn. All of the flowers I picked out ended up being dark purples and bright oranges, suited for spooky bouquets. Instead of sweet corn I decided to try to grow popcorn. My grandpa grew popcorn as a boy so I just have to give it a try myself.
Jumping into a new farm during the fall is really scary. Soon frost will hit and I will have to figure out how to spend my winter planning a successful spring planting. I am hopeful that I will have a good harvest of popcorn, squash and many flowers to sell to help pay for spring seeds.
I am excited to start my own business, to learn more about growing vegetables, and to have family and friends come over to pick flowers with me.
